What the Sujay Wasan appointment actually tells you about how Diageo plans to compete differently in APAC

On the surface, Diageo appointing a new President for Asia Pacific and Global Travel Retail is a straightforward leadership news story. Sujay Wasan joins from Procter & Gamble, where he spent nearly 30 years, most recently as Senior Vice President and Regional Leader of North America. The appointment was announced on 3 August 2026. The role covers a region that generates roughly 20% of Diageo’s global revenues. Standard corporate succession.

Look slightly harder and something more interesting emerges. Wasan is not a drinks industry hire. He spent his career in fast-moving consumer goods at P&G – a company whose commercial operating model, brand management discipline, and approach to retail execution is about as different from the premium spirits industry’s traditional playbook as it’s possible to be while still selling branded products in similar channels. And he’s not an anomaly in how Dave Lewis has been filling senior roles since taking over as Diageo CEO on 1 January 2026. The Wasan appointment is part of a pattern – and the pattern is the commercially interesting thing.
