The Scotch whisky industry exported £5.36 billion worth of product in 2025. That figure comes from the Scotch Whisky Association’s own published data. It sounds substantial until you place it next to the 2022 figure, which was over £6 billion. In three years, the category lost more than £600 million in export value.

The coverage that followed focused on the decline. The more interesting story is inside the decline. Because Scotch whisky is not one thing experiencing one set of conditions. It is several things experiencing completely different conditions simultaneously, and the aggregate number obscures almost everything that matters about what is actually happening.
