MGP Ingredients Q1 2026: The Contract Distilling Collapse Is the Industry Telling You Something.

MGP Ingredients reported Q1 2026 results on 29 April 2026 with a GAAP net loss of $134.8 million – dominated by $179.5 million of non-cash impairment charges against goodwill, intangible assets, and fixed assets in the Branded Spirits segment. On an adjusted basis, stripping out the non-cash items, EBITDA was $15.0 million and EPS was $0.15 per share. The adjusted figures came in ahead of management’s plans. The impairment charges, while large, are accounting acknowledgements of what the market already knew: the branded spirits valuation environment deteriorated sharply through 2025.

The more analytically interesting story in MGP’s Q1 2026 results is not the impairment. It is the three-way divergence across its three business segments – and what each segment’s performance reveals about the state of the broader spirits industry. MGP is the only company in this series that simultaneously produces branded spirits for consumers, distils whiskey under contract for major producers, and manufactures specialty food ingredients. That structure makes its results a unique window into the industry from multiple vantage points simultaneously.

“I’m pleased with our first quarter results, as sales were in-line with expectations, while adjusted EBITDA and adjusted basic EPS came in ahead of our plans. During the quarter, we remained focused on disciplined execution and long-term value creation, as we continued to navigate a challenging industry backdrop. We also maintained momentum in our premium plus portfolio, led by Penelope Bourbon and continued demand for our specialty offerings, and delivered growth in Ingredient Solutions, reflecting improvements in operational reliability.”
