What Diageo’s Executive Departures Actually Reveal About the Strategy

Three announcements in eight days. Read together, they reveal something specific about the strategy that the August update will be the first to formally articulate.

On 11 May, Diageo opened the first phase of the Littleconnell Brewery in County Kildare and simultaneously confirmed a further approximately €400 million investment in a second brewery at the same site, dedicated entirely to Guinness and Guinness 0.0 production. On 15 May, Bloomberg reported that Ed Pilkington, Diageo’s North America Chief Marketing and Innovation Officer of eight years, Hina Nagarajan, Africa President, and Louise Prashad, Chief HR Officer, are all departing as Dave Lewis accelerates his restructuring. The same report, confirmed by the Irish Times and denied by no one at Diageo, indicated that the Africa and Europe divisions are being merged into a single unit.

The trade press has covered these as three separate stories. They are one story.

The Guinness investment is not a gesture
