On 30 April 2026, President Trump announced on Truth Social that he was removing tariffs on Scotch Whisky imported into the United States. The announcement came during the UK state visit, with Trump citing the long-standing trade relationship between Scotland and Kentucky as the context.
Mark Kent, Chief Executive of the Scotch Whisky Association, responded directly. “This deal is a significant boost for the Scotch Whisky industry in our most valuable export market. Distillers can breathe a little easier during a period of significant pressure on the sector.“
Both statements are accurate. The tariff removal is genuinely significant. The period of significant pressure is also real – and the tariff was not its only cause.
