“RTD is the only major beverage alcohol category that grew in 2025. But the 8% CAGR that defined 2019–2025 has reset to 2% through 2030. The brands building for the next chapter are not the ones arriving at this category. They are the ones who understand which part of it they actually own.”
Refine Drinks – The RTD Opportunity Report 2026
The opportunity

The category is maturing. The opportunity is not over.

In 2025, RTDs grew 3% globally – the only major beverage alcohol category to grow – while spirits fell 4%, beer fell 2%, and wine fell 4%. For the first time, total global RTD consumption reached one billion nine-litre cases. And RTDs overtook vodka in global beverage alcohol value.

That headline understates the complexity of what is happening. Spirit-based RTDs grew 7% while malt-based RTDs declined 5%. The CAGR from 2019–2025 was 8%. IWSR’s forward forecast to 2030 is 2%. The window of undifferentiated category growth has closed. What remains is a maturing category with structural tailwinds in specific segments – and five specific opportunity areas where the data confirms genuine commercial headroom.

This report maps what those opportunities are, what they require, and what the acquisition activity, distribution changes, and consumer data confirm about which brands are positioned to capture them.

Report structure

Six sections. Every argument grounded in primary source data.

  • 01
The State of RTD in 2026
Category growth, the malt-to-spirits shift, the global value milestone, the CAGR reset, and what the US market’s first annual RTD volume decline since 2015 means for planning assumptions.
  • 02
    The Line Extension Myth
IWSR’s confirmed consumer behaviour data on RTD purchase logic. Why the “RTD as recruitment tool for the parent spirit” thesis is not supported by the data – and what the implications are for brand design and investment.
  • 03
What the Acquisition Data Tells You
Monaco Cocktails, The Finnish Long Drink, BuzzBallz. What every 2026 transaction has in common – and what it signals about where M&A interest will concentrate through the rest of the decade.
  • 04
The Five Opportunities – and What Each Requires
Spirit-based at accessible price points in the off-premise. Occasion ownership as competitive advantage. The on-premise as an underdeveloped channel. Non-alcohol RTD as portfolio strategy. Geographic gaps – UK off-premise and growth markets.
  • 05
    The Distribution Variable
Southern Glazer’s hybrid service model shift. The RNDC restructuring. What the post-RNDC US distribution landscape means specifically for RTD brands building independent account distribution – and why the sequencing of market entry has changed.
  • 06
    The Commercial Read
Three separate reads for three separate audiences: brand managers and brand directors; strategy managers and directors; founders and senior executives at challenger brands. Specific, actionable, grounded in the data in sections 01–05.
Audience

Built for people making brand-level decisions about RTD.

The RTD Opportunity Report is written for the people deciding what to do with RTD – whether to launch, how to position, which markets to enter, and what the category’s maturation means for their current strategy.

Brand Managers and Brand Directors
Evaluating whether to launch an RTD, how to position one already in market, or whether to add a non-alcohol variant. The report addresses each of these questions directly using confirmed consumer data.
Strategy Managers and Strategy Directors
Portfolio decisions, M&A evaluation, geographic sequencing. The report provides primary-source confirmed benchmarks for RTD acquisition valuations and CAGR planning assumptions.
Founders and Senior Executives
Challenger brands evaluating US market entry, UK off-premise positioning, or acquisition interest. The report addresses the distribution variable change that affects new entrants specifically.
Category and market managers
Responsible for understanding RTD within a broader portfolio context. The report provides confirmed competitive intelligence on where the category is heading and which segments have genuine headroom.

The report is explicitly not written for consumer research teams, financial analysts, or operational roles. If your question is about RTD market size modelling, category forecasting at a granular level, or operational supply chain, this report is not the right product. If your question is about what to do with RTD as a brand decision – it is.
