The 50% US tariff on Canadian spirits has been paused again

US President Donald Trump extended the deadline for the imposition of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods on 18 August 2026, following what the White House described as progress in trade negotiations. The extension gives Canadian and US producers more time to reach a framework agreement before the tariff takes effect. The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) issued a statement welcoming the extension but cautioning that uncertainty remains for producers on both sides of the border.
