Boston Beer’s CFO is leaving in September – the third senior departure at the company in 12 months

Boston Beer Company announced on 20 August 2026 that Chief Financial Officer Diego Reynoso is leaving the company on 14 September to take a new opportunity. Matt Murphy, currently Chief Accounting Officer, has been appointed Interim Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer effective 15 September. Murphy joined Boston Beer in 2006 as Corporate Controller, became Chief Accounting Officer in 2015, and previously served as Interim CFO in 2023 before Reynoso’s appointment. The company has initiated a search for a permanent replacement, considering both internal and external candidates. The announcement was made via a GlobeNewswire press release and corresponding SEC 8-K filing on 20 August.

Reynoso had been awarded a $1.2 million stock retention bonus in 2025 following the earlier CEO transition. His departure, less than a year after that retention award, is the third senior leadership change at Boston Beer in 12 months. In August 2025, CEO Michael Spillane stepped down and founder Jim Koch returned to the role. In early 2026, CMO Elizabeth Lysyj announced her departure with a separation agreement. Koch has declined salary and bonus in his returned CEO role and remains chairman of the board. Boston Beer’s current portfolio spans Samuel Adams, Dogfish Head, Angry Orchard, Twisted Tea, and Truly Hard Seltzer.

The commercial context

Boston Beer’s Q1 2026 results showed depletions improving and some category stabilisation, but the company acknowledged a “dynamic operating environment” with its portfolio “not yet fully matched” to improving category trends. Net revenue in full-year 2025 was $1.965 billion, down 2.4%, with depletions and shipments each falling mid-single digits. Gross margin improved to 48.5%. Truly Hard Seltzer has been under sustained pressure as the hard seltzer category has contracted – a dynamic we covered in depth in our RTD Strategy Guide published 11 August: read here. Samuel Adams remains the group’s most stable brand by volume. For any supplier, distributor, or competitor tracking Boston Beer’s commercial direction: three senior departures in 12 months typically signals a business in transition, and the permanent CFO hire will be a meaningful signal of strategic direction.
